4 Fantastic DIY Gifts for Gamers We Discovered in 2019

0 vote

According to popular opinion, most DIY gifts suck big time.

Sadly, that's true. 😅

Making an awesome DIY gift that would NOT suck requires an insane amount of time, creativity, dedication, and... Well, you really got to know your recipient well.

So, most DIY gifts suck, but some are absolutely stunning.

This short post is dedicated to our favorite 4 DIY gifts for gamers we found in 2019. Some of them are waaaay older than that, but who cares? They still deserve an extra spotlight!

Get ready for some amazing stuff.

For the (somewhat) oldschool Pokemon player
Simple and sweet, minimal crafting!

Credit goes to Reddit user IdkArledge, who posted this picture saying he had made it with his wife for a Pokemon-loving buddy. Nice work, people!

In case you're not familiar with everything Pokemon, the gift features:

  • The recipient's name stylized as the Nintendo logo
  • A Game Boy Color SP, the last portable console from the Game Boy line
  • Three Pokemon games
  • Three collectible cards for each game's signature legendary Pokemon
  • 8 badges, one for each Pokemon Gym in the games

We're not sure if the console and games are functional and playable (that would make the gift EXTRA fabulous!), but even if they aren't, this sentimental display is guaranteed to make a geeky heart melt.

Btw, why the somewhat oldschool players in the title?

Well, the Pokemon franchise goes back to 1996, with the first playable titles being Pokemon Red and Pokemon Green for the Game Boy. The stuff looked like this:

That's oldschool, in Pokemon terms.

The games from this gift (Pokemon Ruby, Pokemon Emerald, and Pokemon Sapphire) were initially released 6 years later in 2002, and looked like this:

Huge difference, right? Still oldschool, but not really oldschool.

This difference is subtle, but gifts are a delicate thing. The devil is always in the details.

Imagine preparing such a thing for a recipient who's too young and doesn't even know what a Game Boy is? Effort wasted.

Imagine making that thing for a hardcore oldschool gamer who likes ONLY the first generation of Pokemon and the first several games for the original Game Boy, with everything else being a heresy in their opinion? Effort wasted.

But someone who was 7-15 years around 2002 (when the games were released), who had his own Game Boy, and probably played the Pokemon Trading Card Game?

BINGO. 💥

Useful & funny DIY gift for the modern gamer
Time for some binge shopping!

Credit goes to Reddit user Turtylx and his girlfriend, who allegedly made this awesome gift for the lucky dude. Kudos for the couple! (Hope you're still together and rocking, people.)

It's simple, creative, and really useful. Seriously, ask any Steam user about that irresistible urge to buy EVERYTHING on sale. As the redditor Jewsafrewski noted in the comments under this post:

It'll really be a shame when those 30 games just sit in your library as a constant reminder to how you bought 40 games and only ever played like 3 of them even though all 45 look like so much fun.

So true.

Btw, this "break in case of emergency" box is a variation of one of our favorite ways to give money in 2019. Just saying, there are more cool ideas through that link there. 😉

Mind-blowing DIY gift for Witcher fans
Ever wanted to have your own witcher bestiary?

If you're familiar with the Witcher video game series, you may remember the iconic Bestiary that the protagonist carries all around with him. Basically, it's a journal that Geralt fills with useful information about the monsters he faces, the potions he learns to brew, and all other kinds of useful information.

Well, guess what the redditor Jjinxy made for their boyfriend as a Christmas gift?

(Hint: both of them are huge Witcher fans.)

Tadam! A real witcher's bestiary!

Jjinxy ordered the leather cover on Etsy, but everything inside is pure DIY bliss. Just take a look at these pages!

Something glowing for the Fallout fan
A cheap and awesome DIY last-minute gift for gamers

The Nuka Cola is the most popular soft drink in the Fallout universe. An obvious allusion to Coca Cola - with a pretty nuclear twist. 💥

Redditor MymlanOhlin, knowing that their little brother is a huge Fallout fan, decided to make a whole crate of Nuka Cola bottles!

The idea is simple. You just take a bunch of Coca Cola glass bottles and cover them with printed Nuka Cola labels. Voila!

Super fast, super cheap, and really pleasant for a Fallout fan.

To make the gift even more pleasant, MymlanOhlin decided to make a Nuka Cola Quantum too. Basically, it's just a clear glass bottle of Coke filled with water (and a few drops of blue food coloring), covered with Nuka Cola Quantum labels - and with a few LED lights put under the thing!

Here's the final result:

For comparison, here's how the item looked like in Fallout 3:

Awesome job! 👍
